After Christmas, Mick, Phil, Owen and I all went up to Sanctuary Gaming Centre in Sutton-in-Ashfield, for some Flames of War Vietnam games. Owen played Phil, and I played Mick. We both played the same scenario, 'Search and Destroy', and the elephant grass roll was a 6, so limited visibility all round.

Infantry hides in the woods, whilst the M113s take a more circuitous route around the outside |
Turn one, and the Huey 'slicks' try and land some troops at the LZ objective |
The ANZACs walk straight into a minefield |
Sanctuary Gaming is a converted church, which is very impressive, but cold with no heating in December :) |
Shoutout to Phil Hale in the red jacket in the background. He is trying out the brand new copy of Desperature Measures Mrs. Hale gave him for Christmas |
PAVN AA ambushes underneath the slicks |
Needing 4s, Mick completely whiffs the to hit roll |
The ANZACs clear one of the minefields with minimal casualties |
And move over and around the other minefield with casualties |
A quick look at Phil and Owen's game. The Hogs appear to be inflicting a heavy toll on the PAVN |
More of Phil and Owen's game |
My Hogs arrive.... |
...and wipe out the AA |
ANZACs take their first objective |
An infantry company appears and takes out a Hog in revenge |
The survivor considers his options... |
PAVN secure the LZ objective |
PAVN reinforcements also take an objective |
The Anti Tank platoon pushes forwards into the next dense jungle |
The Hog changes target, going for the PAVN sappers on the LZ objective |
PAVN infantry secure another objective |
And receive further reinforcement |
The ANZAC 1iC calls in a supporting platoon, securing the LZ for them |
The other Hog is taken down by the PAVN |
The helicopter mounted infantry safely dismount and join up with the Anti Tank platoon |
The Anti Tank platoon pores Beehive into the two PAVN companies in front of them |
The M113 platoon pushes towards the same infantry |
The second ANZAC platoon engages the sappers |
Whilst RcL rifles appear in the ANZAC deployment zone |
Mick has a lot of infantry saves to make |
ANZAC infantry and the 2iC take out the sappers in an assault |
After several bloody assaults, both PAVN companies in the centre are destroyed. |
But they take their toll on the M113 platoon |
The remnants of the rear ANZAC rifle platoon tries to take on the RcLs, which on reflection, was not a great idea |
The PAVN take out the M113 platoon |
But cannot get through the defensive fire put out by the Anti Tank platoon |
Defensive fire keeps the ANZACs out of an assault with the RcLs, and as it is now turn six and all the objectives were taken, the game is over. |
We decided that we would score the objectives as 2 points for both the Free World and PAVN forces (usually Free World players get 2 points and PAVN players get 1), which gave us a final result of 8-5 to the PAVN. It is always a pleasure to play Mick, and great to get a game in over the Christmas period.
I have wondered for a while if the M113 patrol was a liability, and I am now convinced they are not worth the 2 VPs they inevitably give to my opponent, next time I may try some off table artillery instead.
