US Glider Engineers vs. Atlantik Wall Panzergrenadiers in Fighting Withdrawal

This Thursday, Owen and I got together for a game of Late War. He is looking at his options for Corrivalry in February, and I was happy to oblige with a Red vs. Blue match up. The armies were 1650 points.

Owen's recce move up to the minefields with their pregame move

German halftracks and Panzer IVs en masse, ready to move out

Every Shot Counts - Owen's 'Super Tigers', who are the bane of my existence every time I face them

More halftracks on the other flank

Two platoons of Glider 105s hold the left, Infantry on the middle objective, infantry on the far objective, TD Security Section are (hiding) behind the woods, and the Shermans are in ambush

Halftracks move out

The other halftrack platoon uses the terrain to conceal their advance

Tigers move into the woods, and bog, but wide tracks saves them

Ambush! Shermans appear from the wheatfields

destroying two Panzer IVs, and bailing another

The platoon holds their nerve, and passes its morale check

Motorcycle recce dismounts, whilst the half track mob moves up closer

The other platoon threatens my right flank

Tigers take out a Sherman 75

Nebelwerfers range in on the Shermas, but to no effect

The Sherman 76s finish off the Panzer IVs

One of the Shermans shoots at the halftracks, bailing one out

Bazooka teams come to shoot at halftracks, but only bail one of them

Hellcats appear to take some shots at the Tigers

And destroy one

Artillery bails a halftrack and destroys another

Forcing them to dismount

But they push on over the minefields

With a couple of casualties

The remaining Tiger takes revenge on the Hellcats

Also forced to dismount, the panzergrenadiers on this flank come in for an assault

And take the objective! Platoon morale for the Engineers, and they fail it, with a 1iC reroll. *gulp*

A lone Hellcat moves to contest the objective, whilst a second infantry platoon moves out

An odd standoff

Panzergrenadiers move into the woods, but cannot assault because of tank terror (tank not pictured), even with a reroll

They also do not get in on the right flank

Shermans 76s and the remaining Tiger trade shots, with no effect

Infantry finally arrive to reinforce the right flank

Infantry get into assault this time

Taking out a couple of teams, before the Americans back off

Small arms fire takes out several stands of Germans, and the platoon commander fails his morale check

Still shooting it out....

Sherman MGs make short work of the German infantry in this wood

The Tiger still won't give up the fight, making all those armour saves

But we call it here, 5-2 to the Americans!
